EPC - what is it? Well its a measure of how much something costs and stands for ‘Earning Per Click’ or does it? A lot of people and some affiliate networks argue that it stands for ‘Earning Per 100 Clicks’ their reasoning being that the letter C is the roman numeral for 100 so EPC is ‘Earning Per 100′ but for this to stand up surely it should be EPCC? Earning Per 100 Clicks.
So what difference does any of this make?
In all honesty not a lot, but it does highlight the inconsistency that seems to plague every aspect of affiliate and online marketing. One network may claim that a certain programme has an EPC of £1.10 now as an affiliate im thinking that’s great! Potentially if I send good traffic to this merchant I could make £1.10 per click! But it just so happens this network may be showing me their per 100 figure, so where im expecting £1.10 in reality the network average is £0.011 or 1p. Bit of a difference? This can be vital if your going to be spending your own money promoting someone as based on the EPC you may initially think you can afford to be spending 10p a click with the hope that the website converts well. But based on the 1p EPC you cant afford to spend a thing on it!
Another thing about the people that say EPC is earning per 100 clicks, what about CPC campaigns? The same people that say EPC is per 100 charge by the singular click on CPC (cost per click) campaigns – surely that cant work out?
The only reason that this quite annoys me is when people are asking about programmes saying that you only have a EPC of say 40p when a similar programme on another network has an EPC of £2.20 it makes one programme look a lot better, where in actual fact the 40p EPC programme has a higher EPC because the other network is using EPCC.
I always use EPC as a per click measure, sometimes it can be a low amount sometimes it can be so high people thing im talking about per 100 clicks but I’ll always use it as per click.
