“Hopefully it should be a bit more friendly now. This shouldn’t affect sales much at all as its purely cosmetic.” … hum being a usability guru i would have to disagree with this!… :D a more firendly site should equaly more sales…as people will find it easier to use and not leave the site when they shouldnt!…

I agree! Why would a company make any cosmetic changes if it didn’t expect better sales as a result?

The changes aren’t purely cosmetic though, if it was just a shiney new homepage id agree that yes its either to simply show off or improve sales. The new Alpha site is that, a new site. Things such as the cross sell at the checkout stage aren’t to make it look better and I wouldn’t class changes like this as ‘look & feel’ changes but more ‘functionality’.

Yes it looks nicer (although customers used to the old site would probably disagree - some people just don’t like change!) but a nice looking site doesn’t necessarily mean a better converting site.

Functionality wise its also much improved with better internal linking, better site search, faster availability checks & cleaner checkout process – but of course any affiliate of Alpha’s would know that, come on Ash when you going to get signed up and start doing some sales!
