Yes agree but it’s not just affiliates, it’s merchants & agencies bidding on competitor brands too. You are also forgetting that there are also a lot closed groups around which some networks fail to disclose and can count for a good portion. Oh and then there is always Ebay. We have scripts running monitoring this ourselves, the 80% figure is an exaggeration to what we have attained so far, however there is a lack of monitoring across the three main ppc search engines, where checking on overture or msn seems to get neglected. ie often only Google is checked.

Hi Paul,

I admit the 80% figure was just plucked out of thin air, and the only search engine I was checking was google as it’s the most used. However the type of link I was referring to was purely affiliate links, most search agencies or online agencies redirect through their own domain first eg dartsearch or tsw0 domain first and I was excluding these from my results. If a company wants to bid on another companies name then its both the company and search agency who are fully responsible.

Despite some of my posts and views im 100% pro affiliate, however since having more exposure to the merchant side I can see why the industries got such a bad reputation and why its being held back. Im not blaming affiliates for this, as any affiliate who wants to really make an effort at promoting a merchant will stick to any rules, play ball and build a relationship but there are still a lot of people out there to make a quick buck and sadly this could always be the case unless networks really do protect their merchants.

My plan, next week is to set up a campaign bidding on a term that is included in a merchants excluded list, im going to purposefully break the terms of a merchant and see what happens. Ill report fully on what I’ve spent, what sales have been made and any contact that the merchant or network makes. More to follow next week, ill probably start it on Tuesday (out Monday).

Just be careful, as some networks might not actually appreciate this. It might be better to inform a merchant first & let them know it’s an experiment to ascertain how long it takes for the network to detect.

However, you mention that you have only checked Google so far, this applies to what networks do to in most instances.

But if you are disappointed with that, just take a look msn uk for example, there are more keyword restrictions being broken on there than anywhere else possibly. With price comparison sites getting in on the act too.

For example:

Marks & Spencer

Across PPC search engines you’ll also notice how Moneysupermarket affiliates can seem to bid on most finance brands, when you look at the finance programs across networks there are restrictions on most of them. So what does this suggest to you? Join the program via Moneysupermarket?

Even though we know many affiliate ids who are breaking the rules (and some are genuinely unintentional so they should be given grace). We are not prepared to snitch on anybody, unless it’s Ebay related.

Perhaps more focus should be applied for networks to at least mention in program information page if a closed group is in place i.e. lets get the transparency first. Otherwise you can find your time being fully preoccupied rather than focusing on your own revenue streams. Only if you can automate the process do it, otherwise doing it manually will take up too much of your time, and as an affiliate your time is your most precious commodity.

btw with a script you can see the familiar id’s cropping up quite regularly, especially on closed groups, whether it be direct link to merchant or landing pages (combining affiliate link & whois details)

How deep does the rabbit hole go?
