Wow Dan,

This is pretty explosive stuff, I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to let that one loose on my blog.

I’ll be watching the development on this with interest. I’m sure Marcel will have a word or two to say about this in the near future!

Duncan Popham Says, in 5-24-2007 at 07:31:33 from 81.155.110.79

An extremely brave blog post. Both this ad your recent “breaking the rules” series are extremely valuable so well done.
Any predominately anonymous system is open to abuse/corruption and I am fairly certain that I’ve witnessed some myself. One of the problems here is that I doubt if there are any laws being broken (careful with that fraud word - could be litigation territory). The immoratlity of the action is pretty plain however and needs to be stamped on.
I’ll be following the comments on here to see if there is any direct response from the culprit - best of luck - and well done again

wow, makes me feel like packing in and going home, what chance have we got with Affiliate managers like him, (present company excluded Dan!)

What have you got to say Marcel, how long before Hoseasons sack you ?

No wonder you sat on this post for a while - a brave post. I’ll follow the comments with interest.

You’ve a new subscriber to your blog now.

Ooh, interesting stuff. If what he’s doing is what you say (just covering my a$$!) he’s been a very naughty boy.

Well done for posting this.

Gah, that’s pretty shocking stuff and looks pretty damning. It must be noted though, that plenty of merchants use affiliate links in their own ppc campaigns as a tracking tool - I do with SIM4travel but using our internal tracking software, though we only do in-house PPC at very select times (when investors are sniffing about). Actually, the account is in my personal name. I’d better go change it quick…

Moose Says, in 5-24-2007 at 11:01:11 from 62.252.0.4

Dan,

Quite noble indeed, you’ve probably broken a few privacy T&C’s but you get our full support on this.

However, you have just scratchd the surface of the rabbit hole, which you will find will probably go a lot deeper.

Clarke Says, in 5-24-2007 at 11:10:39 from 82.133.124.229

My reply was here May 2007!

Dan’s Edit: Clarkes origional post was removed at the request of a 3rd party

Moose Says, in 5-24-2007 at 11:55:06 from 62.252.0.4

Please may we see Clarkes orginal post? Don’t be influenced by other networks.

Michael Says, in 5-24-2007 at 12:46:06 from 193.195.71.201

Ha whatever next. We’ll soon be hearing that affiliate managers take bribes to allow certain affiliates onto the special brand bidding programs.

Keith Says, in 5-24-2007 at 13:47:13 from 84.65.207.189

Excellent article Dan, its good for the industry to bring this kind of thing into the open, brushing such things under the carpet can only harm affiliate marketing as a whole.

Let this be a lesson to all, naming and shaming is probably the best way forward in proving that the affiliate industry will not tolerate unethical practices, why should everyone be blackened due to the scummy tactics of a minority element.

Mogga Says, in 5-24-2007 at 13:52:37 from 81.178.92.166

It’s apparently a much dirtier affiliate world than I imagined. There might be a valid reason for this situation but it looks scarily like people can find easy ways to take advantage of the system.

Every time I see affiliate managers posting about new sites they’re making - I feel that my income is being eroded.
What’s the answer? Only being an affiliate or a affiliate manager but not both? How could that work when some people do both part time.

This is something the affiliate community needs to deal with in an effective way.

Mitchy Says, in 5-24-2007 at 13:57:10 from 87.75.150.91

Great post Dan. Can’t quite believe how blatant some of that is - but Im sure Moose is right when he says its the tip of an iceberg.

Peter Koning Says, in 5-24-2007 at 15:19:54 from 24.67.107.159

Wow. Good detective work. Any response from the network or the manager of the affiliate manager? Maybe this is all pre-approved by them but I doubt it.

Ned Says, in 5-24-2007 at 15:23:41 from 82.211.92.150

Interesting how nobody has mentioned anything about Tradedoubler, surely they are partly responsible as they did ‘turn a blind eye’.

Yet again another network lets it slip, (although they pitch to new clients about brand protection) blah blah blah!

Very good post though!! Need people with more balls in this industry.

morleymouse Says, in 5-24-2007 at 18:20:12 from 172.143.127.40

Clarifying a few points:

Firstly try and remember I wrote that post a few months ago, since then Marcel has – as far as I know, lost his job with Hoseasons. I did speak with Marcel’s boss when all this was being investigated and Hoseasons as a company seem very affiliate friendly and were quite frankly shocked at what he had been doing.

Moose – don’t worry, im under no illusion as to how far the rabbit hole goes. With such a new industry, and such a lot of money being invested in it I guess its to be expected. Some peoples morals just crumble when money is involved.

Michael – if that doesn’t already happen id be very shocked!

Mogga – it seems that’s it the rule obeying affiliates like yourself that are never exposed to this that get the biggest shock, I do still believe it is the minority who are breaking rules left right and centre but sadly just one or two rules broken can make an affiliate very valuable to a network

Ned – I agree. In reality whenever a TradeDoubler invoice landed on his desk he was signing it off straight into his account, but remember TD were getting their 30% too.

Kieron Says, in 5-24-2007 at 18:22:38 from 86.131.221.143

Dan, as any readers of my blog will tell you I’ve long been a fan of naming and shaming so well done mate.

And if anyone reading this doesn’t know, the guy Dan refers to was sacked.

David Furlow Says, in 5-24-2007 at 20:50:16 from 86.137.159.186

Many thanks to Dan for helping me uncover this fraudulent activity at Hoseasons. On the night we discovered the activity I was completely gobsmacked that someone could hoodwink their own company to such an extent.

It was purely luck that Marcel was infact using the same redirect as we use on our pixel area and so therefore I was able to identify many of his aff ids and pass these to Dan for investigation from the merchant side.

We have had to wait a while to make this public and I will be speaking to Hoseasons at length about the final outcome tommorrow. There is plenty more detail about what lengths (or lack of) this guy went to to make his little income and ill try to let everyone know here or on our blog.

Although i didn’t quite understand it all (I’ll read it again) - what a post! Sounds as if you stuck it to someone who really deserved it!

I think i’ll stick to seo though…..

Sanela LDL Says, in 5-29-2007 at 10:13:35 from 81.159.19.102

Some very good detective work here, truly shocking… I am an affiliate manager myself, managing Leisure Direction’ affiliate program and. apart from an in-house affiliate program, we are with buy.at and a couple of other networks to join soon. It is true that affiliate manager has a wealth of “inside” information that can use it to their own advantage, however, if you are loyal to the company you work for and, therefore, want to protect their and your own reputation, things like this should not be happening and are trully embarrassing and could damage your reputation within the industry forever (or do people tend to forget soon!).

Perhaps this calls for a discussion whether affiliate marketing needs regulatory body as any other industry has it. Perhaps there are too many cowboys around and merchants and affiliates alike need to be protected and adhere to some industry standards. I think this is where we will be heading in the future… Just a thought!

Tip of the iceberg.. hmm I’d say it’s the tip of Antarctica !

Rabbit hole.. more like Rat hole, rabbits are cute fluffy things, rats are cunning devious dirty thangs..

Can you imagine how many more are at it with fake, friends, family, company names instead of their own details too ?

andy_jacko Says, in 5-30-2007 at 20:32:20 from 91.84.121.114

A very brave post, well done on your detective work.

How common is this sort of activity? It’s rather worrying this sort of thing going on, then i’m pretty naive regarding what goes on behind the scenes.

I worry so much about breaking merchant rules when it comes to PPC that I end up emailing managers with an overview of what I’m planning.

thankfully there are some very good managers out there who bend over backwards to help their affiliates.

Will there be added pressure or monitoring of affiliate managers by merchants as a result of this sort of activity? This is all well but having someone scruitinising their every move and activity can’t be good for affiliate manager productivity.

Ben Brown Says, in 5-31-2007 at 13:42:11 from 194.130.58.186

Good spot Dan and congrats for the name and shame!

Is this guy liable to repay any money then?

David Furlow Says, in 5-31-2007 at 20:43:41 from 86.137.159.52

Ben Brown, remains to be seen what can be recovered apparently. A lot of the evidence is circumstancial. Suffice to say though hes not working at Hoseasons anymore and that can only be good for all affs involved.

andy jacko - im not sure its that widespread at all. This case had a few factors which worked in the guys favour so he could get away with it. Trust is inherently so important in affiliate/merchant relationships so im glad we got this bugger before he made even more of a mockery.

Ben Jackson Says, in 6-1-2007 at 11:38:27 from 84.12.15.82

Awesome post Dan. You definitely did the right thing exposing this.

diytravel received an affiliate application from Marcel last week - thanks to this post we will be closing his account down.

Marcel, why don’t you respond to this post? I am sure everyone would like to hear from you.

James Avery Says, in 6-3-2007 at 22:02:16 from 81.179.39.81

Dan,

I know that you’ve kept this one quiet for a while, so fair play to you for spilling the beans.

Paul Says, in 6-7-2007 at 11:38:14 from 85.211.189.77

As someone that generates bookings for Hoseasons on a semi-regular basis and someone that has liaised with Marcel on occasion, I’m absolutely shocked.

Well done, Dan, for unearthing it all.
